How to Convert Gallons to Pounds
The short version: multiply the number of gallons by the weight of one gallon of that specific liquid. Volume alone doesn't tell you weight. A gallon of motor oil and a gallon of water sit in the same size container but weigh noticeably different amounts.
Here's the process step by step:
- Find the density of your liquid, usually expressed in pounds per gallon (lb/gal) or pounds per cubic foot.
- Multiply: gallons × pounds per gallon = pounds.
- Double-check your density value. Temperature affects density, so values can shift slightly for very precise work.
For everyday use, room-temperature density values work just fine. The calculator on this page uses standard reference densities for the most common liquids.
