Time Duration Formula

Step 1: Convert times to total minutes (or seconds).
Multiply the hours by 60 and add the minutes. For seconds-level precision, multiply hours by 3,600, minutes by 60, and add the seconds.

Step 2: Subtract start from end.
Total Duration (minutes) = (End Hours × 60 + End Minutes) − (Start Hours × 60 + Start Minutes)

Step 3: Convert back to hours and minutes.
Divide the total minutes by 60. The whole number is your hours; the remainder is your minutes.

Written out cleanly:

  • Duration (minutes) = End time in minutes − Start time in minutes

Convert Duration to Decimal Hours

To go the other direction, take the decimal portion and multiply by 60 to get minutes. So 4.4 hours is 4 hours and 24 minutes (0.4 × 60 = 24).

Overnight Time Duration Calculations

Overnight durations are probably the most common source of confusion in time math. If your shift starts at 10:00 PM and ends at 6:00 AM, a straight subtraction gives you a negative number, which is obviously wrong.

The fix is to add 24 hours (or 1,440 minutes) to the end time when it's earlier than the start time. So 6:00 AM becomes 30:00 in the calculation, and 30:00 minus 22:00 gives you 8 hours. That's your shift length.
