Add or Subtract Time

Adding and subtracting time is probably the most common use case. Say your meeting starts at 10:15 AM and runs for 1 hour and 45 minutes. What time does it end? Or maybe you clocked in at 7:30 AM and worked 8 hours and 20 minutes. When did your shift end?

The tricky part is that time uses a base-60 system for minutes and seconds, and then switches to base-12 or base-24 for hours. So when you add 45 minutes to 10:30, you don't get 10:75. You get 11:15. The calculator takes care of that regrouping automatically.

Subtraction works the same way in reverse. If you need to find what time something started, enter your end time and subtract the duration. The result will always be expressed in clean hours, minutes, and seconds without any weird decimals to interpret.

One thing to keep in mind: if you're subtracting time and the result crosses midnight, make sure you're accounting for the date change. A shift that ends at 1:00 AM and lasted 9 hours started at 4:00 PM the previous day, not 4:00 AM the same day.

Time Duration Formula

If you want to understand what's happening under the hood, the basic time duration formula is straightforward. To find the duration between two times:

  1. Convert both times to a common unit, usually total seconds or total minutes from midnight (or from a reference point).
  2. Subtract the start value from the end value.
  3. Convert the result back into hours, minutes, and seconds.

In plain math, it looks like this: if your start time is 2:15:00 PM (14 hours, 15 minutes, 0 seconds) and your end time is 5:42:30 PM (17 hours, 42 minutes, 30 seconds), you subtract the start from the end. That gives you 3 hours, 27 minutes, and 30 seconds.

When the calculation spans midnight, you add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting. So if something started at 11:00 PM and ended at 2:00 AM, you treat the end time as 26:00 (2:00 + 24 hours) and subtract 23:00, giving you 3 hours.

For multi-day spans, convert everything to total seconds or use a date-aware method that counts calendar days first, then adds the remaining hours and minutes. The formula stays consistent; the numbers just get larger.

Decimal hours are worth a special mention because they come up a lot in payroll and billing. If someone worked 2.75 hours, that's 2 hours and 45 minutes (0.75 × 60 = 45). Converting decimal hours to hours and minutes just means multiplying the decimal portion by 60.

Going the other direction, if you have 2 hours and 20 minutes and need a decimal, divide the minutes by 60: 20 ÷ 60 = 0.333, so 2 hours and 20 minutes equals approximately 2.33 hours.

12-Hour vs. 24-Hour Time Format

The 12-hour clock uses AM and PM to distinguish between morning and afternoon/evening hours. It cycles from 12:00 AM (midnight) through 11:59 AM, then restarts at 12:00 PM (noon) through 11:59 PM. It's the standard format in the United States for everyday use.

The 24-hour clock (also called military time) runs from 00:00 at midnight straight through to 23:59 at the end of the day. There's no AM or PM because every hour has a unique number. 14:00 is always 2:00 PM; there's no ambiguity.

To convert from 12-hour to 24-hour time, add 12 to any PM hour except 12:00 PM (which stays as 12:00). For AM hours, just remove the AM designation, and treat 12:00 AM as 00:00. Going the other direction, subtract 12 from any hour above 12 to get the PM equivalent.

For time calculations, 24-hour format is generally easier to work with because subtraction doesn't require you to think about AM/PM crossovers. Most calculators accept both formats.
