How to Use the Tile Calculator
Using a tile calculator is straightforward, but you'll get the best results when you go in with accurate measurements. Here's what you'll typically need to enter:
- Area dimensions: The length and width of the surface you're tiling, in feet, inches, or meters.
- Tile size: The dimensions of a single tile (for example, 12x12 inches or 300x300 mm).
- Waste percentage: A buffer to account for cuts, breakage, and pattern matching. More on this below.
- Grout joint width: Optional, but useful for precise coverage calculations.
Once you enter those values, the calculator returns the number of tiles required, often broken down into whole tiles, cut tiles, and a recommended overage. Some calculators also factor in the number of boxes you'll need based on the tile count per box.
Measure twice before you enter anything. A half-inch error in a room dimension can throw off your count by more than you'd expect, especially in larger spaces.
